Alexander Joseph Furst

Alex was diagnosed with Torticollis when he was 4 months old
and diagnosed with Plagiocephaly at 5 months old.
Tuesday May 27th he will start wearing a Cranio Cap (helmet) to reshape his head.
He will have to wear this helmet for 22 hours out of the day for up to 4 months.
I thought it would be interesting to track Alex's progress in pictures from before, during and after.

Torticollis

Many babies who develop Plagiocephaly, have neck tightness, or Torticollis, which makes repositioning very difficult.  The most noticeable symptom of Torticollis is a persistent head “tilt” to one side.  Torticollis can be present at birth due to restricted intrauterine environment and can require physical therapy or neck stretching exercises to remediate the condition.

Plagiocephaly

A parallelogram shape with a flattening on one side of the back and often a bulging forehead on that same side.

March 2009 Update

Still waiting on the blood tests.

Alex is showing significant delay with his cognitive skills, motor skills and speech.
He qualifies for Eagan's Early Childhood Special Education program and will start in April.
We started Alex on a gluten, casein, soy, egg, sugar and dairy free diet and he is also seeing a CranioSacral Therapist for his Plagio.
Does Alex have Autism?
We don't know. What we do know, is that we have been down this road before with Alex's cousin, Ronan.
Thanks to Ronan, we knew the "signs" and saw them in Alex.
Amber got the ball rolling on diet and therapy and they say early intervention is the key.
This is not a road one would choose to go down.
But.. you know what?  It Is What It Is. You move forward  and love them all the more.

My new motto, I picked up off the web.....All will be Okay... even if it isn't.

February 2009 Update

Alex had his MRI done in early February and the results were normal. We are still waiting for the blood tests to come back.

December 2008 Update

Alex has had some testing done for developmental delay. He had a hearing, vision and a developmental assessment check this last month.
He had a EEG done  testing for seizures. The test was done at home as he was hooked up to it overnight to see if he was having night seizures.
No seizures, but they found he was having asymmetrical waves on the right side of his brain when he was drowsy and now the neurologist wants a MRI done.
His vision and hearing are fine. The assessment shows him to be at 8 months for speech and they would like to see him in some occupational therapy.

My first taste of Cheetos.. Ohhhhh Boy! My mommy sure yelled at grandpa for giving them to me.

I was SUPER BABY!!! for Halloween.

We make a  great pair!

The top of the head is the last to re-shape.

Not so pointed anymore. YAY!!

This is what I really think of that helmet!!!

Grandma!! Not now. I'm watching my Backyardagins.

Soon, my right side will be just as nice.

Cutting teeth isn't so fun.

Hanging out with my big brother, Colin.

He likes Backyargagins too.

Head shots.

I don't think his head is meant to have top view pictures taken.
I've taken about 10 pictures and not one of them turned out.
So these pictures below are side views.
